Social Media in Quebec, Canada



Social Media has become very popular around the world, Millions of people use it to communicate, and stay in contact with friends and family, specially if they are far. Small and large companies around the world also use it everyday.

Some people haven’t realize that Social Media is a great way to communicate with other people who can be a bit far. Our favorite celebrities and politicians are also present on Social Media, and a lot of them communicate with their fans this way. Sometimes is the company behind them who take care of the account, but artists keep track of what is being said and also answer themselves.

Companies in major cities also do that in order to know what their clients are looking for. Customer Service doesn’t limit to the telephone anymore, having the chance to send a message directly to companies is a very good way to be in contact between them and their clients.

Some people express their frustrations directly on the company Facebook page or on Twitter, because these spaces are open to everyone it gets very touchy, companies can suffer from bad comments, specially if the company does nothing about it, companies are better to react and try to solve issues, so other clients know that the customer service is active on social media and that problems can also be solved this way.

In Quebec 18% of web users have used social media to interact with companies so far, and this number is growing. As being mentioned on the results of a survey done by CEFRIO at the end of 2010. Companies in Montreal and all over the province of Quebec can benefit from Social Media using it as a tool of communication, like a bridge between the Customer Service & Sales departments and their current clients (also their future clients)

Taking care of current clients is as important as taking care of getting new clients. Thousands of people in the province are using Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, LinkedIn, Foursquare and others. So why do companies in Montreal and in Quebec in general are still hesitating to use Social media to communicate with clients?

    I’ve read this study and found it full of very interesting stats. i.e. the disparity between Quebecers online and Businesses as well as the fact that only around 3% of QC population has a Twitter account. Which doesn’t mean that Twitter is inconsequential. Those that do represent a huge level of influence: bloggers, journalists, brands, politicians etc whose tweets tend to get picked up in the larger media.

    I remember when we spoke about the fact that only 3% of Quebecois use Twitter, companies should do more than that.

    I’m sure the level of usage will go up, but I think Twitter isn’t being taken very seriously by a lot of companies. It takes a lot of time to plan and implement a sound strategy.

    Yes, If I resume it: Social Media is about communication.

    If companies want to communicate, they can benefit from Social Media Tools.

    Agree. You can’t be social without communication. No point having a phone if you ain’t gonna talk 😉
